- Write the incorrect name spelling exactly as currently printed on your passbook.
- Write your correct name matching your official Aadhaar and PAN documents.
- Explain the operational difficulty (e.g. failure of DBT transfer or cheque clearing).

Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a name change when Aadhaar and PAN themselves have different spellings.

- Assuming internet banking profile name updates automatically without branch submission.
- Failing to link the updated bank record with Aadhaar NPCI mapper for government transfers.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can minor spelling mistakes in bank passbook be corrected without court order?
Yes. Minor clerical errors (such as typographical slips or expanded initials) can be corrected by the branch manager upon physical verification of your valid Aadhaar and PAN card.
- Is a gazette notification required for surname change after marriage?
For women changing surname after marriage, a Marriage Certificate or an affidavit along with updated Aadhaar is accepted by banks without requiring a gazette notification.
- How long does the name correction process take?
Once verified by the branch officer, core banking records are typically updated within 2 to 4 working days.
- Will my account number or cheque book change after name correction?
Your account number remains identical. However, you should apply for a new cheque book and ATM card so that they carry your corrected name.
- Will pending cheques be honored during the name correction process?
Cheques issued with the old name might face technical return if presented during the transition; it is best to inform the branch manager or issue fresh cheques.
